GRAND OPENING of EXPO 216 is Friday May 27th, 2016. The opening coincides with Downtown Wilmington’s 4th Friday Gallery Night from 6pm-9pm.
Expo 216 will be open to the public Wednesday-Sunday from Noon-6pm.
216 N. Front Street, Wilmington NC
The opening exhibit, Ocean Plastic, will run through December 2016 and is on the issue of plastics being overly disposable and the harm it is doing to marine life. There is a CSI: Albatross interactive exhibit inspired by photographs by artist David Liittschwager as well as other educational exhibits, mingled with art from local artists and fashion designers, that fill two stories of the building.
Artist and activist Bonnie Monteleone with Plastic Ocean Project has an educational exhibit upstairs, What Goes Around Comes Around. Next door, in the Theatre Room, is my exhibit; Light within the Darkness: What Lies Beneath. The installation is a series of underwater scenes of marine life (sea turtles, jellyfish, squid, etc.) made out of recycled plastics and interacting with plastic trash. The lights in the room may be switched between gallery lighting and backlight to show the “bioluminescence” in the paintings.
Another exciting announcement about Expo 216 is I will be on staff at the gallerium during this year’s theme, Ocean Plastic. So if you must miss the opening make sure to come by during business hours and get a tour of this amazing gallery-museum hybrid.
